The Carlos Hilado Memorial State College (CHMSC) in Negros Occidental is now officially a state university, Bacolod Rep. Greg Gasataya announced on Tuesday, April 19.

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) certified its compliance with the requirements for university status.

CHMSC now officially a state university

Gasataya, former representatives Alfredo Benitez ( Negros Occidental, 3rd District) and Alejandro Mirasol (Negros Occidental, 5th District) authored the conversion bill that was approved by Congress and signed into law on April 26, 2019.

The main campus of CHMSU is in Talisay City with satellite campuses in Bacolod City and Binalbagan town.

The conversion means more budget, better opportunities, more academic programs/courses, improved capacity to accommodate more students with free tuition, development and improvement of academic facilities, an increase in academic research for CHMSU, Gasataya said.

It would also mean refinement of CHMSU’s corporate image, and an overall improvement in quality of education in all its campuses, he said.

This goes hand-in-hand with Republic Act No. 10931 or the Free College Education Act that he also co-authored during our first term in line with our advocacy to improve access to and the quality of public education in Bacolod City, Gasataya said.*
